Melanie Duckworth

I live in Halden, a small Norwegian town close to Sweden, with my husband, our small son, our baby girl, and two black cats. Halden has everything that a small town should: a river, a harbour, a sixteenth century fortress, lakes, deer, wolves, pine forests, and a nuclear reactor.

I am an Associate Professor of English Literature at a local University College. I come from Adelaide. I have a Masters in Medieval English Literatures from the University of York, and a PhD in Australian medievalism from the University of Leeds.

This blog charts the final years of my PhD; my years of acclimatising to living in Norway, which included working in a daycare centre and casual teaching contracts at two universities; our travels in Europe, Australia and the USA; paragliding; poems, and the love and grief of my early years of motherhood. These days it’s mainly a chronicle of my children’s lives, but everything else comes into it now and then. When it comes down to it, I write because I love to write, I need to.

  1. Hi Mel,

I know it has been a very long time and I didn’t even know you were in Halden! It looks magical from your photos. Several things reminded me of you recently and so I thought I would try to track you down. I had to pack the book with your poems the other day because I am moving back to America. My supervisor, Jane Hawkes, then told me she was going to Australia for several months, that reminded me of you too. And finally today I was invited to submit a proposal for the Australasian Victorian Studies Conference which is taking place in Adelaide!

Will you please email me when you have the time elizabeth.laing25@gmail.com because I would really like to re-connect. Sorry this seems to out of the blue!

    With Best Wishes, Betsy McCormick

  2. Dear I’m not even sure who I am writing to,

I don’t use or understand blogs..I came across a reference to a PhD chapter that had something to do with Randolph Stow, about whom I am writing a book. I would love to chat with anyone who would like to chat about Stow.

  3. Dear Melanie,
I didn’t know you were in the US till I found your blog pictures. Felix is beautiful! If you find yourself in Southern California, let me know.

(I’ll be in Montana for a few days in August but will have grandchildren in tow.)

  4. Hello! I’ve read the poems you’ve posted here and want to tell you how very much I enjoyed them. Lovely, lovely poems! Your style is elegant and spare, and says so much with quietness. Thank you.

  5. Hi! I don’t know if this is the right place to get in contact with you, but I just want to say that I love your pictures. I actually found this blog through a Google images search that brought up this shot: https://norlight.files.wordpress.com/2009/10/paraglider.jpg. I am currently working on the staff of Stowaway magazine, a not-for-profit travel magazine that is produced as part of the capstone class for editing minors at BYU. My class is currently working on the fall issue of Stowaway, and we thought the image linked above would be perfect for our cover. One of our feature stories in this issue is about outdoor “falling” adventures such as skydiving, bungee jumping, and paragliding, and this image captures the spirit of our fall issue. Would you be willing to let us use this image? We would need a high-resolution version to make it work for the cover. Let me know what you think!

  6. Dear Melanie,
I am hoping to get in touch in relation to an essay collection I am editing on Randolph Stow… and your possible interest in contributing to this collection? Is there an email I can contact you on?
    Warm thanks
    Kate
